How Much Will 1 Yard of Concrete Cover? (The No-Nonsense Guide for St. George)

I get this question at least three times a week " How Much will 1 Yard of concrete cover?
while I'm out at job sites in Washington or Ivins. Someone is standing over a dirt patch with a tape measure, looking a little stressed. They’ve seen the "big brand" calculators, but they want to know how it works in the real world—specifically our real world here in Southern Utah.
The Industry Standard (The "Magic" 81) If you look at the charts from the big suppliers like Schmitz or Cemex, they’ll all tell you the same thing. In a perfect world, one cubic yard of concrete covers exactly 81 square feet if you pour it 4 inches thick.
Here’s the quick breakdown for the common depths we do at M3 Industries:
4” Thick (Sidewalks/Patios): 81 sq. ft. per yard.
5” Thick (Heavier Patios): 65 sq. ft. per yard.
6” Thick (Driveways/RV Pads): 54 sq. ft. per yard.
Why "Perfect Math" Fails in St. George Now, Mud Loads and the others are right about the math, but they aren't standing in your backyard. Out here, we have two things that "eat" concrete:
The Red Dirt Heave: Our soil isn't a flat laboratory floor. If your subgrade has a "low spot" that’s just an extra inch deep, you’re suddenly pouring 5 inches instead of 4. That 81 square feet drops to 65 real quick.
The "Short Load" Nightmare: If you order exactly what the calculator says and you run short by even a wheelbarrow-full, the plant is going to charge you a "short load fee" that’ll make your eyes water.
The Merrill Rule: The 10% Cushion I always tell my guys: Calculate your yardage, then add 10-15%. If the math says you need 6 yards, order 6.5. It’s a lot cheaper to have a little left over for a small fence post than it is to have a "cold joint" in the middle of your new driveway because the truck ran dry.
Merrill’s Pro Tip: "If you’re doing a big pour in the middle of a St. George July, that concrete is going to set fast. Don't spend that precious time doing math on a napkin. Give me a call at M3, and we'll handle the yardage and the heat for you.
